Midy is an app that securely shares verified information and confirms identity online, without handing over unnecessary personal data.

The team and I designed an entirely new mobile app, from research, concepts, design, testing, all the way to production-ready designs for the launch version.

TLDR

TL;DR

With Midy, users can:

Verify identity documents and store them securely for reuse.

Share verified information selectively without giving away unnecessary personal data.

Keep track of shared personal data and who it was shared with.

Challenge

CHALLENGE

Online identity verification is on the rise but it often requires users to share more sensitive information than needed ...

From opening a bank account to purchasing age-restricted goods, online identity verification is becoming increasingly popular but the process is repetitive, manual and often requires sharing a photo of an ID in unencrypted channels.

Solutions

SOLUTION

... so we created a mobile app that verifies and stores identity documents securely and only shares personal data selectively

Once a document is verified, it can be stored for reuse and its key information can be shared selectively to meet a precise service request avoiding the oversharing of sensitive information.

Leadership

TIMELINE

Three major iterations

Three major phases were planned to take advantage of key market opportunities with different priorities.

Discovery

User

TARGET AUDIENCE

Leveraging a wide user-base

We used existing market research and ongoing studies from the brands in the Gen family to isolate the desired target audience and recruit users for testing.

IDEATION

Balancing control and simplicity

In the initial phase, we concentrated on designing how users interact with personal data to make the data-sharing process transparent but not overwhelming.

Research

USER TESTING

Understanding attitudes towards personal data

In the early phases, testing focussed on understanding user needs and priorities when handling personal data online.

Later, we expanded our activities to include usability tests and quantitative surveys.

Interface

INTERFACE

Leveraging the design system

A design system with all the essential components was developed early in the project allowing all designers to move straight into high-fidelity UI.

For new components, designers contributed suggestions back to the team responsible for making the updates.

Verifying that you are you

Users can verify documents like government IDs, university degrees and more by scanning them and confirming their likeness.

The documents are then securely stored in Midy for future reuse.

Design Challenges

Explaining the inner workings of the system and designing multiple flows to cater for all entry points.

Confirming your identity online

Users can confirm their identity at participating services with the simple press of a button or by scanning a QR code.

The journey can start from mobile, desktop, app or browser.

Design Challenges

Designing flows for mobile and desktop dual-device scenarios and overcoming technical limitations with passing context between apps.

Your data, your rules

Users can review all the data that they will share with a service in a ‘will share/won’t share’ format.

This mechanic emerged from extensive rounds of testing and guarantees transparency with clear and simple language.

Design Challenges

Balancing control and ease of use and designing an information-dense interface for mobile.

A true digital wallet

Users can review the documents stored in Midy at any time.

A ‘History’ section allows users to review all key activities like adding a document, sharing information with a service and more.

Design Challenges

Offering multiple digestible layers of detail for documents.

NEXT STEPS

More documents, more flexibility

The product could improve and expand in the following directions:

  • More types of documents accepted from more issuers with their unique look and feel
  • A more flexible interface for sharing individual parts of multiple documents
  • A centralised section for reviewing connected services individually
  • Exploring in-person use cases

Shoutouts.
